George Verwer

History

An elderly lady in New Jersey, USA, faithfully prayed for the students of a certain school for 17 years! She sent them a copy of the Gospel of John, and that was the instrument for a young man named George Verwer and other students to commit their lives to Jesus at a campaign by Billy Graham in 1955.

After spending their vacation in Mexico distributing gospels, George and many students and friends went to Spain in 1960. In the summer of 1962, 200 young people came together to pray and study the Bible. They traveled in small groups to the majority of the cities in Europe and literally millions of Christian brochures were distributed. That was the beginning of the summer campaign!

When George Verwer went to Britain in the 1960's and 70's, his energy and originality challenged the disciplines of global evangelism, and immediately touched many lives. The emphasis on "training while we do evangelism" introduced an element that attracted many British Christians . The vision and the purchase of the boats probably put OM on the map more than any other single factor.

Today, OM has a dynamic global ministry with a staff of over 3000 full-time workers in some 100 countries.
